This humpback whale, Megaptera novaeangliae, is performing a behavior of the coast of Maui, Hawaii, known as spyhopping. The bump-like knobs on the top of the head are called tubercles. Each protuberance contains at least one stiff hair. The purpose of these hairs is not known, though they may provide the whale with a sense of "touch."
